The year 2019 is coming to an end - a good time to take a look at twelve exciting and emotional months full of ups and downs. Looking back at August: a cup exit, a comprehensive defeat, and the first point of the season.
As the new season drew near, FCA dipped in to the transfer market for Tomáš Koubek (Stade Rennes) and Reece Oxford (West Ham United), who FCA already had on loan in the second half of last season. In terms of departures, Martin Hinteregger joined Eintracht Frankfurt and Kevin Danso moved on loan to Southampton FC in the Premier League.
After a dress rehearsal of sorts in a 2-3 friendly against FC Bologna, the first competitive game of the season was finally here: a DFB-Pokal tie away at Regionalliga side SC Verl. FCA fell two goals behind very quickly, and despite a late consolation goal from Andre Hahn, FCA were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal in just the first round.
Augsburg’s first Bundesliga fixture was away at Borussia Dortmund, where they made a dream start after just 31 seconds, with Florian Niederlechner scoring to put the away side ahead. It was the fastest Bundesliga goal scored by an Augsburg player at the time. However, they joy was short-lived as BVB fought back hard to win 5-1. “We got pummelled,” said captain Daniel Baier.
Two new signings were made in the days that followed in an attempt to bolster the team. In addition to veteran Stephan Lichtsteiner, FCA brought in Tin Jedvaj on loan from Leverkusen for the season. The two new signings went straight into the starting XI just a few days after signing, as the team faced their first home game against Union Berlin. Ruben Vargas scored the opener in the second half but in the closing stages the visitors managed to equalise. “We still need time,” said Martin Schmidt after the game, as he pleaded for fans to be patient. Shortly after, Felix Uduokhai completed the switch to Augsburg - another loan signing this time from Wolfsburg.
