Michael Gregoritsch is back at FC Augsburg: the 31-year-old Austria international returns to the Fuggerstadt carrying a wealth of Bundesliga experience. The seasoned forward has already made 270 appearances in Germany’s top flight, scoring 59 goals and providing 25 assists

Gregoritsch’s time in professional football began with Grazer AK before moving to Germany after a spell with Kapfenberger SV. Stints with TSG Hoffenheim, VfL Bochum, FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV followed, before he first joined Augsburg in the summer of 2017. After successful years at SC Freiburg and six months with Brøndby IF, the Austrian is now back at his former club.

One factor behind his return is the current head coach. Manuel Baum, who coached FCA between 2017 and 2019, played a key role during Gregoritsch’s first spell at the club. Under Baum, the forward made 63 competitive appearances, scoring 18 goals and setting up a further six. Gregoritsch has only ever played more games under Christian Streich at SC Freiburg (83).

Gregoritsch knows the club, the surroundings and the coaching staff inside out – and FCA can look forward to a striker strong in the air and ruthless in front of goal. He has already made 129 Bundesliga appearances for Augsburg, scoring 29 times – the club’s all-time top goalscorer Alfred Finnbogason netted 37. The striker himself is relishing his return: “When the opportunity to join FCA came up, I was immediately fired up.”

His goal secured Austria’s place at this year’s World Cup

Alongside his Bundesliga success, Gregoritsch has also been a key figure for Austria. He has scored 23 goals in 72 international appearances and has featured at two European Championships. Austria have also already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup. In a decisive qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gregoritsch came off the bench to score the winner with a volley in the 77th minute, sealing Austria’s first World Cup appearance since 1998.

Gregoritsch, who will wear the number 38 shirt at FCA, has also made his mark on the European stage. In the Europa League, he scored eight goals in 15 appearances for Freiburg and reached the round of 16 twice with them. During that spell, he also played alongside Yannik Keitel and Keven Schlotterbeck – teammates he will now be reunited with in Augsburg.
