4-0 defeat in Berlin

FCA left empty-handed on final matchday

First Team 16.05.2026, 17:25

FC Augsburg were beaten 4-0 away at Union Berlin on matchday 34, bringing the 2025/26 season to a close in ninth place – still the club’s third-best Bundesliga campaign despite the defeat.

Manuel Baum made two changes to his starting XI from the previous week. Yannik Keitel replaced the suspended Kristijan Jakić, while Robin Fellhauer returned to the side in place of Dimitris Giannoulis (muscle). Baum was also without Arthur Chaves (bruised knee), Elvis Rexhbecaj (illness) and Alexis Claude-Maurice, who missed out with an ankle problem.

Both teams took a few minutes to settle, keeping possession across their defensive lines, but the game soon became far more open. FCA had the first promising moment, with Anton Kade doing well down the right, beating several opponents on his way towards goal before cutting inside and going for goal himself. His low effort drifted narrowly wide of the right-hand post (6’).

Augsburg were hit by an early setback soon afterwards. Union goalkeeper Carl Klaus quickly launched a long ball forward, with Finn Dahmen racing out of his goal before colliding with Fellhauer. András Schäfer was quickest to react, chipping the ball through to Andrej Ilic, who was left with a simple finish into the empty net (10’).

FCA tried to find gaps in a well-organised Union defence as the half wore on, but struggled to break through. Baum's side remained alert and disciplined at the other end, however, meaning clear-cut chances were limited for a spell.

Two goals down at the break

The hosts struck ruthlessly again shortly before half time. Another long ball from goalkeeper Klaus caused problems for the Augsburg backline, with Oliver Burke flicking it on into Ilic’s path from the centre circle. The striker then tried his luck from just outside the box and picked out the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0 to the hosts just before the break.

The first chance of the second half also fell Union’s way, but Dahmen kept FCA from falling further behind. Livan Burcu broke through down the left and squared the ball to Burke, who had a free shot from around 11 metres out, but the FCA goalkeeper reacted superbly to save with his foot (48’).

Union did get their third in the 54th minute. The hosts took a short corner, with Burcu moving the ball on to Schäfer on the left edge of the box. He took aim and hammered the ball into the top-right corner.

Jeong adds a fourth for the hosts

Augsburg kept pushing in the closing stages, but struggled to create real danger in front of the Union goal. Substitute Uchenna Ogundu did have a good chance late on, controlling the ball acrobatically in the 86th minute before seeing his shot from a tight angle come back off the outside of the post. Union then had the final say, as FCA were unable to clear the ball inside their own box and it eventually fell to Wooyeong Jeong. He sent Dahmen the wrong way and slotted home to make it 4-0. Referee Patrick Ittrich, who will bring his career to an end this summer, blew for full time shortly afterwards.

FC Augsburg therefore end the 2025/26 season ninth in the table with 43 points, making it their third-best campaign in their 15 years of Bundesliga football. FCA have only ever collected more points twice before, in 2013/14 and 2014/15.
