FCA lose final game of the season 2-1 against Leipzig

First Team 27.06.2020, 17:30

A week after FCA secured Bundsliga survival, they put in another strong performance in a tough game against RB Leipzig, which ended in a 2-1 defeat. This means that FCA end the season in 15th place.

In the last game of the season, head coach Heiko Herrlich made four changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Fortuna Düsseldorf. Goalkeeper Tomas Koubek, who last played in the 3-2 loss against Gladbach on Matchday 24, started as first-choice ‘keeper Andreas Luthe was out with a shoulder injury. Also out were Raphael Framberger (muscle problems) and Florian Niederlechner (foot injury). Alfred Finnbogason, Andre Hahn, and Tin Jedvaj were also back in the starting lineup.

RB Leipzig started strong, but FCA held them off well. Augsburg intended to disrupt Leipzig’s structure early on by playing a high line. After winning possession back, Augsburg would tend to play a lot of long balls forward. Leipzig had the first shot in anger of the match, when Nordi Mukiele was one-on-one with Koubek, but the Frenchman fired high over the bar. Augsburg sat back since that point, but almost produced the opener afterwards. The first chance for Augsburg came fifteen minutes in, but Finnbogason was unable to score when found in the penalty area.

Augsburg’s best chance came shortly afterwards. After a cross from Phillipp Max, Rani Khedira’s strong header was deflected over for a corner (16’). But Augsburg’s amount of chances began to slip away, and RBL came into their own. 27 minutes in, Timo Werner scored the opener. Up until the break, FCA did not have another big chance until the second half.

Feisty second half

The second half started much how the first half had ended, wherein both teams had chances, but Leipzig’s chances were better. The most exciting moment of the match thus far occurred at the hour mark, where Max was involved in a tackle in the penalty area on Nordi Mukiele, which referee Felix Brych adjudged as a red card and sent the Augsburg left-back off. However, after more than five minutes of VAR, the system announced that there had been no contact and the red was rescinded. Max, who was already on his way off the pitch to the dressing room, was allowed to return to the pitch.

Vargas with a beautiful equaliser – Werner scores again

After a Mukiele foul, the game suddenly was alive again. After Max’s free kick hit the wall, Ruben Vargas shot from distance to level the scores at 1-1 (72’). When it looked as if Augsburg had earned a point, Werner scored again. After a long ball from Angelino, Werner muscled his way into the penalty area and gave Leipzig the lead with a low shot into the left corner (80’).

After a gutsy performance, FCA ended the season in 15th place.
