FCA continue their great start to the season with a 2-0 win over Dortmund!

First Team 26.09.2020, 17:23

FC Augsburg picked up a second consecutive win to the start the new Bundesliga season. Heiko Herrlich's side defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 on Saturday evening. FCA fought hard at the back and were clinical in front of goal.

Head coach Heiko Herrlich was forced into one change from the 3-1 win at 1. FC Union Berlin on the opening day. Ruben Vargas was out with muscular problems, so André Hahn came into the side after impressing from off the bench in the capital.

Borussia unsurprisingly took control of the game from the beginning. FCA sat back early on, kept things tight and got stuck in. Dortmund had a large majority of possession, but apart from an Axel Witsel effort (6’), didn’t trouble FCA’s goal early on. Florian Niederlechner had Augsburg’s first shot in the tenth minute, although he was in an offside position.

FCA became more confident as they grew into the game. Niederlechner again had a dangerous moment against Bürki, but was offside (24’). Three minutes later, the striker’s effort was cleared by Mats Hummels (27’).

Jude Bellingham tested out Rafał Gikiewicz at the other end, but FCA were continuing to tackle well and win back the ball. Herrlich’s side then took the lead on the stroke of half time. Daniel Caligiuri’s free-kick was headed home by Felix Uduokhai from close range to make it 1-0.

Borussia pressed for an equaliser and had two good chances before the break. Rafal Gikiewicz made a strong save before a deflected Thomas Meunier shot just went past the post (45+2’).

Caligiuri makes it 2-0 - Gikiewicz with two key stops

After the interval, FCA sat back again to defend the one-goal advantage. BVB couldn’t break down the well-drilled Augsburg team, and before long, FCA again had the ball in the Dortmund net with another ice-cold finish. After winning the ball back in midfield, Augsburg broke quickly as Niederlechner played in Caligiuri, who kept cool in front of Bürki and finished well to make it 2-0 (54’).

BVB reacted with a number of energetic attacks, but apart from a deflected attempt by Raphael Guerreiro (55’), the FCA defence initially did not allow the guests any sight of goal. Augsburg sat deep in their own half and kept Borussia at bay, defending with lots of fight and passion whilst also breaking forward when they won the ball. Carlos Gruezo went close with a lobbed effort in the 68th minute, with FCA looking increasingly comfortable as the second half progressed. Even so, Gikiewicz was called into action twice in the closing stages of the game, saving well from Hummels (85’) and then Erling Haaland (89’) ensuring a 2-0 win for Augsburg in the end.

FC Augsburg earned their second victory in the second game of the season. FCA travel to Wolfsburg on 4th October for the next Bundesliga encounter.
