FCA equalise late on to draw 1-1 with Leipzig

Caligiuri ice-cold from the spot in the dying embers of the match

First Team 15.12.2021, 22:32

FC Augsburg won a point in their second game of a busy period of matches in the run-up to the winter break, drawing deservedly against RasenBallsport Leipzig 1-1. After a strong second-half performance, FCA got their reward and squared up the scoreline.

Head coach Markus Weinzierl made just two changes to the side that won 2-0 at 1. FC Köln: Raphael Framberger and Fredrik Jensen replaced Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (yellow-card suspension) and Daniel Caliguiri (bench) in the starting XI.

Leipzig took control of the game from the off and had two good chances early on. The first saw Emil Forsberg miss narrowly (5’) before André Silva took too much time in Augsburg’s penalty box and was eventually denied by Rafał Gikiewicz (10’). FCA repeatedly tried to unnerve their guests with an early goal, but it was the away side who took the lead shortly after. Benjamin Henrichs squared it into the box for André Silva to tap in from short range and give RBL a 1-0 lead (19’).

After going up, the team from Saxony continued to control the game but spurned several good chances. Silva had a free header which he sent over the crossbar (24’) and a last-ditch Reece Oxford block was required to block Angeliño’s attempt (32’). When they had the ball, FCA were far too unprecise and only had one decent chance before the break as Jan Morávek’s deflected effort flew just over the bar (29’).

Maier shoots just over – Mukiele hits the woodwork

Weinzierl reacted and made two changes for the start of the second period – Arne Maier and Mads Pedersen replaced Morávek and Ruben Vargas. It wasn’t just a different FCA side that took the pitch for the second half in a personnel sense, but they began to play braver and more determined than in the first 45. Oxford missed the target with a header from a decent position (51’) before Maier’s long-range effort sailed narrowly over the crossbar (60’).

Leipzig were trying to retain what they had and only ventured forward when they deemed necessary, but they did have two very good chances inside two minutes. Firstly, Silva squandered a one-on-one against Gikiewicz (72’), and then Nordi Mukiele’s close-range header struck the post (73’),

Córdova hits the bar, and Caligiuri makes no mistake from the spot

Two good chances missed by Angeliño (78’) and Josko Gvardiol (82’) would make it a nervy finish for the visitors, and in between these two opportunities, second-half substitute Sergio Córdova had struck the bar with a header (80’). FCA then found an equaliser shortly before full time. Péter Gulásci initally made a top-quality save for his team (83’) but then referee Florian Badstübner awarded the hosts a penalty from the resulting corner because Benjamin Henrichs had played the ball with his arm. Daniel Caligiuri took on the responsibility and finished calmly to draw FCA level (86’).

FC Augsburg got their deserved reward following a strong second-half performance and come away with a point. Their final game of 2021 comes on Saturday 18th December away to SpVgg Greuther Fürth (15:30 CET).
