FCA come from behind to earn a point against Frankfurt

Pepi makes his first start – Gregoritsch scores again

First Team 16.01.2022, 17:35

FC Augsburg picked up their first point of the year in their first home fixture of 2022 after drawing 1-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt. FCA got back into the game just before the break and also had a chance to snatch victory near the end.

Head coach Markus Weinzierl made two changes to the team which lost 3-1 against TSG Hoffenheim. Reece Oxford returned to the starting XI after serving his suspension and new signing Ricardo Pepi made his first start. Felix Uduokhai and André Hahn were named on the bench as a result.

The game began fairly evenly and neither side allowed the other much time on the ball and looked to move it quickly up the field every time they won possession. A long-range effort from Niklas Dorsch went wide (13’), and at the other end, Evan Ndicka headed over from a corner (20’).

Kamada makes it 1-0 before a cheeky Gregoritsch equaliser

Shortly afterwards, Eintracht opened the scoring. FCA lost possession in midfield and Frankfurt had a lot of space to work in, Rafael Santos Borré played Daichi Kamada through on goal, who went round Rafał Gikiewicz and made it 1-0 to the visitors (22’). The hosts had to settle down after going behind and then got very lucky as Jesper Lindström struck the post from a one-on-one chance against Gikiewicz (29’).

FCA found an equaliser towards the end of the first half. Iago clipped the ball into the path of Michael Gregoritsch who shot from a tight angle on the left-hand side of the penalty box and drew Augsburg level, scoring his second goal of 2022 (38’). FCA kept pushing, and Pepi had a good chance but didn’t make correct contact with the ball (40’). The hosts demanded a penalty just before half time for a handball by Lindström, but referee Sven Jablonski did not view it as worthy of a penalty (45+3’).

Lindström and Niederlechner miss big late chances

The hosts came out lively for the second half, the first chance falling to Pepi whose shot was too central (46’). However, Eintracht soon began to retake control of the game and created a number of good chances. Lindström’s free kick was saved by Gikiewicz (50’) before Almamy Touré missed from close range on two occasions (53’, 59’), and Kamada’s header flew over the bar (64’).
