Goalless draw in Wolfsburg

FCA remain undefeated

First Team 04.10.2020, 17:33

FC Augsburg are still undefeated after drawing 0-0 at VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday afternoon.

With head coach Heiko Herrlich unable to complete the journey to Wolfsburg after being hospitalized due to a pneumothorax, assistant coach Iraklis Metaxas took his place on the touchline. FCA made no changes to the starting XI that secured a 2-0 against Dortmund last weekend.

The over 4,000 fans in attendance witnessed and evenly-matched start to the game, with both teams looking to strike first. Rafał Gikiewicz was called upon early on, as he kept out Wout Weghorst’s attempt from close range (6’). Michael Gregoritsch recorded Augsburg’s first shot on target minutes later, but saw his attempt hit the side-netting (11’). Wolfsburg slowly began to dominate the game, but it was FCA who would come close once again, this time through Florian Niederlechner. The striker deked out goalkeeper Koen Casteels but sent his shot across the face of goal (21’).

FCA were confined to their own half for much of the first half. Iago denied Xaver Schlager with a goal-line clearance (24’), before Wolfsburg had a goal from Josip Brekalo disallowed for offside (26’). Despite having the bulk of possession leading up to the break, the Wolves struggled to break through a compact Augsburg defence.

Gerhardt and Finnbogason come close

The game continued in much the same fashion during the second 45 minutes. Wolfsburg continued to dominate possession, but rarely found themselves in on goal – with one exception. Admir Mehmedi had a free shot inside the box at the start of the half, but was blocked by a superb save from Gikiewicz (53’). Ruben Vargas, Fredrik Jensen and Alfred Finnbogason came on in the 57th minute, but FCA continued to focus more on their defensive shape.

Augsburg only began to up the pressure on attack in the closing phases of the game, but lacked the final touch in front of goal. Both sides came close to finding the back of the net late in the game. Yannick Gerhardt’s shot went just wide of goal (79’), while Finnbogason and Jensen were unable to beat Casteels down the other end (82’). John Anthony Brooks missed on what was the final chance of the game, as it ended 0-0 in Wolfsburg.

After three games played, Augsburg have seven points to their name. After the upcoming international break, Augsburg will be back in action on Sunday (17th October, 15:30 CEST) against RB Leipzig.
