World Cup round of 16: Gumny and Poland defeated by France

3-1 loss to the holders

First Team 05.12.2022, 09:55

It perhaps didn’t come as a surprise against the reigning champions France: In the round of 16 of the World Cup Robert Gumny and the Polish national team were defeated 3-1. The FCA defender was an unused substitute.
France, who came into the game as favourites, took the lead shortly before the break. After an even first half which saw Poland have chances of their own, Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock (44’), before the 2018 World Champions’ quality seriously shone through in the second half, especially that of Kylian Mbappé who scored an impressive brace (74’, 90+1’). In the ninth minute of added time, Robert Lewandowski got a consolation from the penalty spot to make it 3-1.
Gumny’s World Cup adventure is now over, having not appeared in any of the four matches. The final Augsburg player remaining in the tournament is Ruben Vargas with Switzerland, who meet Portugal on Tuesday, 6 December (20:00 CET) for a place in the quarter-finals.
