FCA head coach gives a squad update and discusses the upcoming home game

First Team 12.11.2021, 15:23

Markus Weinzierl held a press conference during the international break, and spoke about the upcoming home game against FC Bayern München on Friday 19th November (20:30 CET) as well as about...

... managing director Stefan Reuter testing positive for COVID-19: “We were of course all shocked. We’re in difficult times right now. With the increasing numbers of cases everywhere, it was clear that we probably weren’t going to go unscathed. I’m glad that none of our players have tested positive. We wish Stefan all the best with his recovery.”

... the international break: “We’re in good spirits, the break's not been too bad. We know what situation we’re in. We’ve looked back at the game against Wolfsburg and we now have some time to work on key areas and study aspects of our game in depth. We’re making the best of the break by working with the players that are still here, and our focus will turn completely to the Bayern game from next week.”

... conceding early goals: “We’ve already shown we’re capable of it, but we need to play with intensity from the first whistle onwards. I feel we might be a bit afraid of losing at the start of games. I think we play with more freedom when we go behind. We always need to give it 100% and we need to instil that process within ourselves even more. It’s a well-known fact that we need to play with more courage and fight as a team.”

“Anyone who faces Bayern is an underdog, so we’ve got nothing to lose.”

... the current personnel situation: “Felix Uduokhai is still in recovery. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw has an ankle issue and Reece Oxford has a knee issue, but I hope the pair will be fully fit for the Bayern game. Florian Niederlechner picked up a sore bruise against Wolfsburg and has not been training recently. He’s confident he’ll be fine to play FCB, but nothing’s guaranteed. Iago is back but still has some pains in his hand. Tobias Strobl has of course been incredibly unfortunate with his injury.”

... Bayern’s quality: “Anyone who faces Bayern is an underdog, so we’ve got nothing to lose. They’ve got an amazing squad full of quality individual talents and they’ll always be the favourites, especially having won nine of their last ten games. But we want to challenge them, put up a good fight and give it our all.”

... the home game against Bayern: “It will be a special game and the highlight of our year. We’re more than happy to play the role of underdogs, because you’ve pulled off a few shocks from this position in the past. We’ve got a great opportunity to gain some confidence, because we usually defend well against the big teams. I want to see the team approach the game with a good attitude and do well in their one-on-one battles. Bayern have a wealth of quality, but we want to come away with something from the game.”
