Weinzierl: "We could have taken the lead"

Post-match reaction to the defeat against Hoffenheim

First Team 14.08.2021, 19:19

FC Augsburg opened the Bundesliga season with a 4-0 defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. "Overall, we deserved to lose," said head coach Markus Weinzierl after the game. Read on for all the post-match reaction to our season opener.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: "The first half was good. We had the better chances to take the lead, but didn't score. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim finished their chances, because we didn't defend well as a team. The 4-0 scoreline is too high, but I don't want to spend time finding positives after a game like this, because the fact of the matter is, we conceded too many goals."

Rafał Gikiewicz: "We have to accept this defeat. Hoffenheim were the better side in the end. In my opinion, we were a bit too fearful and didn't defend well or lost possession too easily on their goals. However, I still felt like we continued to try to fight to come back, even after falling behind. It's tough now immediately after the game, but we will analyse the game in the days to come and take a positive outlook on what's to come."

Ruben Vargas: "The disappointment after the game is huge, even if I think the final scoreline doesn't represent the game. We started well into the match, but lacked that final tough and final pass to finish our chances. We also conceded far too easily. We need to work on that now and improve quickly."

Markus Weinzierl: "It's tough to lose 4-0, especially when you concede twice on the counter in the closing minutes. I witnessed an intense game up to the 80th minute, and we could have taken the lead. We didn't defend well on the opening goal, which allowed Hoffenheim to take the lead. We started well into the second half. We were pressing hard for while and could have scored an equaliser, before they made it 2-0. Overall, we deserved to lose. We weren't able to bring our best performance to the pitch."

Sebastian Hoeneß: "The first half was very balanced, and Augsburg had the first real chance of the game. We weren't pleased with our performance up to that point, and didn't have much momentum on the ball. We were put under a lot of pressure after the break, and it was important for us not to concede then. We were then clinical with our chances and put the game to bed. During the closing minutes, we took advantage of the spaces and added a fourth goal. We were very clincial today, which is represented by the scoreline."
