Weinzierl: “We were clever tactically”

Reaction to the win over Gladbach

First Team 18.09.2021, 18:43

FCA recorded their first win of the season by beating Gladbach 1-0 at home. “We’re obviously delighted to have taken the three points,” stressed head coach Markus Weinzierl.

Florian Niederlechner: “The coach said to me yesterday that Andi was going to start ahead of me, but I would come on and decide the game. It’s crazy that exactly that happened! It’s such a great feeling, and I’m pleased for the fans and the club. We were really strong at the back and had a few bright moments in attack. Our back five really gave us stability and I don’t think the win was undeserved overall.”

Reece Oxford: “We showed a great mentality today. We defended especially well in the first half, and looked to be dangerous on the break in the second. We ultimately managed to get a goal and keep a clean sheet again. I’m really buzzing for Flo who got his goal.”

Niklas Dorsch: “We’ve now kept three clean sheets in five games. Even though our last two home matches were particularly disappointing (having conceded four goals in each), we’ve learnt our lessons and got our rewards today. I’m satisfied with my performance, but ultimately that’s not important – the way the team plays is what matters.”

André Hahn: “Gladbach have a lot of quality, but we had plans of how to stop them. We defended really well and kept another clean sheet. We created several chances ourselves and eventually got what we deserved in the end.”

Ruben Vargas: “It was a really, really good team performance. Celebrating a win in front of our fans again is such an amazing feeling. The atmosphere the 12,500 fans created today really gave us a boost. I’m pleased for Flo after he scored the winning goal. I didn’t have to look up for long as I knew the run he was going to make. I hope that things carry on like this over the coming weeks.”

Markus Weinzierl: “We’re delighted to have won today’s game. It was really important after losing our first two home matches. We were clever tactically, well-organised and took the goal really well. Our plan was to remain compact and then be clinical on the break. We want to continue like this, including winning the majority of challenges like we did this afternoon.”

Adi Hütter: “Based on the second half, we would’ve been good value for a point. We had a lot of the ball, but often made the wrong decision in the final third. Augsburg defended really well to be fair to them. We should have cleared the ball before their goal. We’re obviously not happy to be going away empty-handed.”
