Weinzierl: "You could feel the relief"

Head coach talks to FCA TV

Head coach Markus Weinzierl has been back at FC Augsburg for almost one month. In an interview with FCA TV, the 46-year-old talks about the 2-0 win over SV Werder Bremen, the role played by the fans and the game at FC Bayern Munich (Saturday, 15:30 CEST).

The full-time whistle in the game against Bremen signaled a big weight off the shoulders of head coach Markus Weinzierl. "We won what was a very emotional game for us," said the FCA coach, looking back on the weekend. "You could definitely feel the relief." The team and the coaching staff celebrated staying in the Bundesliga a lot in their hotel in quarantine. "We gave it everything in Saturday's game," Weinzierl said, "and also later in the evening."

For Weinzierl, an important factor in the win over Bremen was the impressive reception from the fans, who had greeted the team upon arrival. "It was very emotional and made an impact. It definitely gave us a boost for the game," said the coach. "Rani Khedira said that if there had been fans inside the stadium, the roof would have been blown off - that sums it up quite well."

Weinzierl: "We want to put up a fight"

The FCA head coach is optimistic that the positive mood can be carried over the summer break into the new campaign. "I hope that this is an initial spark for the new season. We have taken the first steps. If we make some small changes, I'm confident that we won't have anything to do with the relegation battle next season."

Before moving on to thinking about next season, the team will make the short trip to face FC Bayern Munich on Saturday, which Weinzierl doesn't just want to hand over. "We want to put up a fight there, we've done that before," he said, recalling the 1-0 win in Munich in May 2015 during his first spell in charge. "We'll be up against it and want a positive finish. The final impression counts."
