Weinzierl: “We earned the point”

Reaction to Saturday’s 0-0 draw in Frankfurt

First Team 21.08.2021, 18:10

FC Augsburg return from Frankfurt with their first point of the campaign in the bag. “It was about getting our teeth into the new season. We managed to do that and really earned the point today,” said Markus Weinzierl. Here’s all the post-match reaction.

Daniel Caligiuri: “It was a hard-fought match, just as we had anticipated it would be. Frankfurt were determined to get their first win of the season in front of their own fans and we put up as much resistance as we could to stop that happening. We did a good job, but we need to try and be more incisive going forward too so that we create goalscoring opportunities. We can be happy with the point in the end though.”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “It’s always tricky away at Frankfurt when the fans are there. Our aim was to work together to keep a clean sheet and we managed that. We have to do more with the ball though if we want to score. We have to enjoy our football as a group and keep working hard.”

Reece Oxford: “It’s a good point for us because we fought as a team. Frankfurt applied a lot of pressure, but we were able to find the right answers. If we keep on working hard like this, we’ll soon discover more of a goal threat too.”

Felix Uduokhai: “Every Bundesliga game is a huge challenge. We defended our goal with spirit and commitment. I don’t think we could have done much more today. Frankfurt had more of the ball, but we put up some great resistance and deserved a point.”

Markus Weinzierl: “It was about getting our teeth into the new season. We did that with every ounce of energy we had and really earned the point today. We managed to overcome the two injuries and remained compact as a team. The triple change at the end led to a couple of good openings, but getting the win would have been wishful thinking. It’s a step forward compared to the Hoffenheim game, but it’s clear that we have to up our game still. We’ve got our foot in the proverbial door for 2021/22 now though.”

Oliver Glasner: “We can’t be happy with the point, but the performance was pleasing. You could see in the opening period what starting with back-to-back defeats can do to your confidence. We looked shaky to begin with, but we grew into the game well. We had more of the ball, more shots and better chances, so it was a step in the right direction.”
