Weinzierl: “We lacked a cutting edge”

Post-match reaction from the draw in Fürth

First Team 18.12.2021, 19:06

FC Augsburg had to settle for a goalless draw in their final match of the first half of the season away to SpVgg Greuther Fürth. “If you can’t win the game, you can’t lose it,” said Markus Weinzierl after the full-time whistle.

Reece Oxford: “We had more of the game than Fürth and had the better chances too. However, they defended well in their box and that means we have to live with a draw in the end. We’ve had some ups and downs in the first half of the season, but we’ve stabilised ourselves towards the end. We want to build on that after the winter break. We’re confident that we can secure survival in the second half of the season.”

André Hahn: “We wanted more than a 0-0 draw. We found it tough for the first 25 minutes, but then grew into the game more. Overall though, the performance wasn’t good enough, so the result is probably a fair one. It has to be said that we’ve improved during the first half of the season and we’ve grown as a team too. As a result, we’ll pick up the necessary points in the second half of the campaign.”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “The positive from today’s game, in which we failed to score, was that we kept a clean sheet. Chances were there, we had more dangerous moments than Fürth and we were closer to finding a winner. We saw today that every game in the Bundesliga is difficult. Even though we’d have loved to take all three points, a point is still a point ultimately. We’ll have to live with it.”

Markus Weinzierl: “We wanted to win, however we were lacking a cutting edge at the end of a busy week. We were better in all areas, recorded more sprints, won more challenges, had 14 shots to their three, but failed to score a goal in the end. If you can’t win the game, you can’t lose it and you have to take a point – which is what we managed. Our form with an average of 1.5 points from the last eight games is good, and we’ll look to build on that after the winter break.”

Stefan Leitl: “I can only agree with what Markus Weinzierl had to say. We started well, but Augsburg were a lot better after 30 minutes. We had a few good situations without producing any decent shots. Augsburg managed to survive our moments of pressure well and made it tough for us. We got all we could in the end.”
