Weinzierl: “We could have got more out of the game”

Reaction to the defeat in Mönchengladbach

First Team 12.02.2022, 18:37

FCA returned from Mönchengladbach with a 3-2 defeat behind them. “We could have got more out of the game, but we were too sloppy defensively,” said head coach Markus Weinzierl, summarising the game. Read on for all the reaction to the trip to the Foals.

Niklas Dorsch: ”We conceded a goal from one of Borussia’s only chances in the first half that we should’ve prevented. That meant it was 1-0 at half time, but we still knew that anything was possible. Then, the second half started and we were 2-0 down almost immediately – that killed things off a bit. We can’t let that happen. We got back into the game a bit then, but at the end of the day it just wasn’t enough to take the points here today. We need to put the game behind us quickly and show that we can earn some points at home.”

Ricardo Pepi: “We had some good chances, especially in the first half, but we didn’t take them. We were also in the game at the end and could have taken a point from the game. We’re disappointed to go home empty handed, of course. I’m feeling better every week and slowly getting used to the Bundesliga.”

André Hahn: “We didn’t start the game too badly, but the intensity was missing a bit. We had one or two decent chances in the first half but went into half time 1-0 down. We hyped ourselves up for the second half but then conceded again 20 seconds later. Nevertheless, we showed that we didn’t give up and we’ve got a strong set of lads who gave everything to try and turn the game around. Sadly, it didn’t work out at the end of the day. ”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “We win together and we lose together. Today wasn’t good enough from us in general. We made too many mistakes and Gladbach punished them. The biggest thing is that we can’t allow ourselves to conceded goals from crosses. We’re in a relegation battle and we need to secure points. We want to perform like we did last time out against Union in these next two home games with 15,000 fans in the stadium.”

Markus Weinzierl: “It’s a frustrating result, because there was potentially more in it for us. We could have taken the lead, but in defence we were far too sloppy. We weren’t tough enough in the tackle around our own penalty area and we didn’t do enough to stop the crosses from coming in. After the break, we wanted to get back in the game, but we completely fell asleep at the start of the second half, and invited the opposition strikers onto our goal. When we made it 2-1, I thought we might’ve been able to get something from the game, and when you have 14 attempts on goal in an away fixture, you need to be taking at least a point away from the game. For a team fighting to stay up, it simply wasn’t enough and so we’re travelling home empty-handed.”

Adi Hütter: “It was a good Bundesliga match with a lot of exciting moments and five goals. Augsburg could’ve taken the lead, and caused us several problems at a time. In my opinion, we were the better side over 90 minutes, and at 3-1 we had a really good chance to make it four. Augsburg never gave in, but we were able to get the result we wanted today.”
