Weinzierl: "We deserved to lose"

Post-match reaction to the defeat against Köln

First Team 30.04.2022, 19:39

FC Augsburg were handed a setback on their push to secure safety, losing 4-1 to 1. FC Köln on Saturday afternoon. "We didn't win our challenges and weren't strong enough in the tackles either," head coach Markus Weinzierl said afterwards. Read on for all the post-match reaction from Augsburg.

Michael Gregoritsch: "We did well for the first 10 minutes, but then lost control and quickly went 2-0 down. We were then chasing after them basically right from the start, against a team that are currently in strong form. We didn't have any control over the game anymore. After the break, we then conceded a penalty after our own throw-in, which basically signalled the end of the game. It's very frustrating, because we now need to pick up points from our final two games."

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: "We started well and had two chances right away. Unfortunately, we didn't score either of them, and then the game went Köln's way. We gave them too much space and weren't compact enough. I think we had several chances today, but in football, what matters is that you score goals, which we failed to do. We're not done yet."

Niklas Dorsch: "The first 10 minutes were good, but a game is 90 minutes long. We conceded two unnecessary goals early on, and from then on Köln controlled the play and we were chasing them. In the end, it's a deserved defeat because we didn't take advantage of our chances. We definitely need to do better in Leipzig. We want to be successful next weekend and secure safety."

Markus Weinzierl: "We were good for the first 12 minutes, but didn't defend well on both their goals. That really broke our spirt. We allowed Köln far too much space and weren't able to find our way back into the game. When we got one back to make it 3-1, I allowed myself a brief moment of hope, but then we immediately conceded a fourth. We didn't win our challenges today and weren't strong in the tackles. That's why we deserved to lose."

Steffen Baumgart, head coach 1. FC Köln: "We delivered a very strong performance today. Augsburg were in control for the first 10 minutes, but then we took over. Our first two shots resulted in goals. I've rarely seen my team be as clinical as they were today. In the end, it's a deserved win for us."
