Weinzierl: "This win is the first important step"

Post-match reaction to the 1-0 win in Bielefeld

First Team 05.03.2022, 00:15

FC Augsburg deservedly picked up a 1-0 win in a hard-fought match against Arminia Bielefeld on matchday 25. Read on for all the post-match reaction to the away win.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: "That was a really important win for us. We already knew before the game that it would be a tough fight. We were ready to take that on. It wasn't a pretty game, but no matter how the win came about, we're taking all three points home. We worked hard as a team, were willing to take on every duel and deservedly won."

Daniel Caligiuri: "It feels good to win on the road. We knew that Bielefeld look to play a lot of long balls. We were there to pick them off and did well in the tackle. Of course it wasn't all perfect, but if we keep playing like we did today then we will pick up the points we need. We can enjoy the win for the next two days, but then it's business as usual. We have put ourselves in a slightly better position, but that's all."

Michael Gregoritsch: "It didn't matter how we did it today, the main thing was that we had all three points at the end of the game. The way we came out of the dressing room at half-time was extremely important. You could see that over the last weeks as well. We really wanted to surpass Bielefeld in the table, which is why we gave it our all right until the end. We deservedly won."

Frederik Winther: "It's an important win for us, because we were able to surpass Bielefeld and increase the pressure on the other sides around us in the table. It was a real hard fight, with lots of tackles and emotions. I had to be ready on short notice due to Felix Uduokhai's injury, and am happy that we didn't allow Bielefeld many chances."

Arne Maier: "Although I played here before, it was my first game in front of this many fans at the Alm. It was a great experience, and I'm happy that we were able to take all three points. It was clear ahead of the game already that this wouldn't be easy. We won the ball a lot, won a lot of second balls and in the end, deservedly won. Now we can enjoy the rest of the matchday in peace."

Rafal Gikiewicz: "This game had everything that you expect from a relegation six-pointer. We gave it everything that you need to win a game like this. Bielefeld played a lot of long balls. We were well prepared for that and did well to defend them. As a goalkeeper, of course you're happy when you keep a clean sheet. We need to continue on in this way over the coming weeks."

Markus Weinzierl: "We were well organised and made a few changes during the break after an evenly-matched first half. We played with three strikers after making those changes, which Bielefeld didn't enjoy. We were able to find our way into the game and deservedly won. It was obvious that it would be a hard-fought game. We took on the challenge and completed 316 sprints. That proves how intense the game was. We were able to surpass Bielefeld and this win is the first important step."

Frank Kramer: "Of course we are disappointed about the result. We played the way you would expect in a game like this. After the break, we made mistakes in our build-up play, which an experienced team like Augsburg know to exploit. I can't fault my team, however. They gave it their all. We need to take the result, pick ourselves back up and confront the situation."
