Weber: “I want to be authentic and bold”
First press conference with FCA’s new sporting director
On Friday morning, Benni Weber was officially presented as FC Augsburg’s new sporting director. Speaking in the press room at the WWK ARENA, the 42-year-old answered questions from the media alongside CEO Michael Ströll.
Benni Weber on…
…his first impressions and starting at FC Augsburg: “FCA has developed brilliantly over the past few years. Something is really taking shape here, and I’m very excited to now be a part of it and contribute in my own way. Over the past few days and weeks, I’ve had in-depth discussions with Michael Ströll. With today’s presentation, it all really gets going for me!”
…the squad and transfer plans: “We have a very strong squad with lots of quality. That being said, we’ll naturally keep our eyes and ears open until the end of the transfer window.”
…his approach and mindset: “We need to be more creative and modern than our competitors. All the expertise within the club will feed into our decision-making. I want to be authentic and bold – especially when it comes to transfers. We want to be active in the market, play proactive football, take initiative and always try to stay one step ahead. That’s the standard I set for myself and my team.”
…where he’ll be on matchdays: “I won’t be sitting on the bench – I can follow the game better from the stands. What’s important to me is being close to the team and providing support to the coaching staff.”
…working with Sandro Wagner: “I’ve known Sandro Wagner since his playing days. He’s a great fit for the club, and I’m looking forward to working with him!”
Michael Ströll on…
…appointing Benni Weber: “Benni Weber has built up a huge wealth of experience at the highest level, with clubs in Europe’s top tier. After his move to Paderborn, he spent two and a half years working extremely successfully with limited resources and earned himself an excellent reputation. We’re convinced of his qualities.”
…the club’s strategic direction: “The ideas he brings with him closely align with our own direction: promoting proactive football, developing young players, helping players progress – it all fits perfectly with what this club stands for. We can all be excited about this new addition.”
…the club’s development: “Football has developed at a rapid pace in recent years. That’s why it’s more important than ever to be as well structured as possible in all areas and to make the most of our potential. At FCA, we’ve distributed responsibilities across many shoulders and have the right people in each department – people who are passionate about the club. I’m really pleased that we now have everyone on board and can push forward together.”
