"We fought with all we had"

First Team 21.12.2019, 14:31

In their final match of 2019, FC Augsburg lost 3-1 away from home against RB Leipzig. After taking the lead through Florian Niederlechner, the Saxony side turned the game around thanks to their pacey players.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “The game started really well for us thanks to the early goal. After that, Leipzig put us under a lot of pressure, but I think we defended well. You could see Leipzig’s quality in this game, they have really quick players. You can’t always defend against this. Yet despite this loss, we can be proud of what we have done in the Hinrunde, especially the run before the Leipzig game.”

Florian Niederlechner: “I don’t want to make any excuses, because Leipzig deserved to win. But when I looked at their equaliser again, there’s a clear foul on Ruben vargas. I would like to know why VAR didn’t check it.”

Tomáš Kubek: “After we went in front, we knew they would pose a massive threat. We defended well for a long time. Leipzig put us under a lot of pressure after the break, which we couldn’t withstand. We ended up not being to pose a threat in attack.”

Marco Richter: “After being a goal up at half time, we had thought to go out there and be brave and bring home the win. Unfortunately, their goals came at unfortunate times for us. I think it was a good performance from us, but we just couldn’t live with Leipzig’s massive quality.”

Martin Schmidt: “After a great run, this opposition was a big test of how far we’ve come. We fought with all we had, but we faced the full force of this Leipzig side. The equaliser was a turning point. We were doing really well up until that point. After the goal, we shied away a bit and Leipzig were a bit sharper than us. We can take a lot from this game for the Rückrunde, which begins with a cracking tie against Dortmund.”

Julian Nagelsmann: “It was a good game from us, perhaps the best in recent weeks. The way we conceded was poor. After that, we created a lot of chances, but their keeper Koubek had a great game. At the break, we said that we had to be patient, because Augsburg are dangerous on the counter. On our equaliser; of course you can talk about possible foul play, but overall we deserved to win.”
