Wagner: “We’re going to Freiburg full of hunger”
Ready for the Bundesliga opener
After successfully clearing their first hurdle in the DFB-Pokal with a 2-0 win in Halle, FC Augsburg begin their Bundesliga campaign on Saturday, 23rd August (15:30 CEST) with a trip to SC Freiburg.
“The Bundesliga has a special magic. It’s a privilege to be able to be part of it – both as a player and as a coach,” said Sandro Wagner, who will make his Bundesliga touchline debut this weekend. “But it’s not about me, it’s about the players on the pitch,” he added.
Wagner was pleased with his side’s display in the cup victory over fourth-tier Halle: “We were sharp and delivered a very professional performance. What convinced me most of all was the attitude shown by the lads.”
The FCA boss is fully aware of the challenge that awaits against last season’s fifth-placed team and Europa League qualifiers: “Freiburg are a different calibre of opponent. We’ll travel with the utmost respect, but also full of hunger and with the clear goal of winning the match. We’re fully focused on getting our first three points.” Around 1,500 travelling fans will be behind the Fuggerstädter in the away end.
Wagner: “The lads are in good shape”
Wagner is expecting “a positive, aggressive opponent with a clear structure,” but feels his own side are well prepared: “We’ll look for the areas where we can hurt them. The lads are in good shape.”
Elvis Rexhbecaj is back fit, while Arne Maier has also returned to team training after missing sessions during the week with flu. Maximilian Bauer remains slightly doubtful, Alexis Claude-Maurice is still sidelined with ankle problems, and Samuel Essende is suspended.
