Wagner: “There are no bonus games for us”
Saturday night showdown against Bayern
For the first time in ten years, FC Augsburg will feature in a Saturday evening Bundesliga primetime fixture (18:30 CEST) as they host record champions FC Bayern München in their first home match of the season.
“We want to put in a good performance and we’re really looking forward to it,” said head coach Sandro Wagner, who spent more than a decade with Bayern as a youth player and later returned for the 2018/19 season. “Bayern were important for me in my childhood, but tomorrow it’s just a normal game,” he added. Both sides began the campaign with wins – Bayern impressing with a 6-0 victory over Leipzig, while FCA took three points from a 3-1 triumph in Freiburg.
To mark ten years with main sponsor WWK Versicherungen, Augsburg will wear shirts featuring a special anniversary print on Saturday, while the new Roman-style players’ tunnel will also be inaugurated. “These are all cool things – the players feel it, and it gives them a push,” Wagner explained. “But in training this week, we’ve been fully focused on the content of our work.”
Wagner left open the question of how exactly FCA will line up against Bayern – “whether with finesse or with power” – but made his intent clear: “There are no bonus games for us. We want to approach every match with the belief that we can win.” A key figure could be goalkeeper Finn Dahmen, who this week earned his first senior Germany call-up. “Finn strikes me as a sharp character who’s really enthusiastic about the path we’re taking here at FCA,” noted Wagner.
The WWK ARENA will be packed out for Saturday’s top clash, with 17,500 season tickets sold this year – a new club record. The Bayern game is also FCA’s final outing before the international break, after which they travel to FC St. Pauli.
