Wagner: "The details made the difference"
Post-match reaction following 2-1 defeat in Hamburg
FC Augsburg's early lead was cancelled out by a penalty and a free-kick goal from FC St. Pauli on Sunday afternoon. Read on for all the post-match reaction.
Finn Dahmen: "Two set pieces decided the game. It was a very evenly-matched game between two teams of a similar strength – details made the difference today. We were caught unaware a few too many times today, which can lead to you losing a game 2-1. However, I think that we're still on a good path. We've shown three solid performances so far and with a bit of luck, we would have picked up more points. We have to keep going and improve."
Fabian Rieder: "At the end of the day, we're left feeling disappointed. St. Pauli are a strong side, as we've seen recently against HSV and Dortmund. It was our aim to win today's match, but we just weren't clinical enough. We were good at finding our way into the final third, but missed that final touch in front of goal. In the end, two set-piece goals decided the game. We're on a good path still and have great players in our ranks, but we just need time. I'm convinced that we will continue down the path we're on."
Elias Saad: "I had obviously hoped for a different ending to my return home. We took the lead early on, but conceding a penalty just before half time wasn't ideal in terms of the timing – the ball hit Cédric's hand from close range. We were able to create good chances for ourselves in the second half that could have helped us turn the game in our favour, but we weren't able to finish them. Two set plays then ultimately sealed our fate, which is obviously very frustrating for us. We now want to go again at home next week and do better!"
Sandro Wagner: "The key thing is that St. Pauli scored twice and we only managed one goal. Our shape was good during the first half and we did well when defending deep. St. Pauli only had a few chances, with the exception of the penalty. We came out of the half-time break feeling strong, but struggled in transition. There were also some problems with our decision-making. In the end, we lost due to a penalty – which was preceded by what I believe as a foul on Finn Dahmen – and goal from a free kick. Obviously we're disappointed as we really wanted to win today. The chances were there, but the details made the difference today."
Alexander Blessin: "We've very happy to have picked up all three points. We struggled to find our way into the game and were unable to really create much in the first 15 minutes. We made it far too easy for Augsburg. From then on, we became more solid and were able to improve. We did well out of possession in the second half and managed to find space for ourselves – our goal to make it 2-1 wasn't undeserved. It was a battle of wills, which we won after managing to fight our way back into it – it was great fun."
