Wagner: “Every weekend is a chance for us to set the benchmark”

Home to Mainz

First Team 19.09.2025, 15:15

The second home game of the season for FC Augsburg is right around the corner, as they welcome 1. FSV Mainz 05 to the WWK ARENA on matchday 4 of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. Kick-off is set for 15:30 CEST on Saturday, 20th September.

Sandro Wagner’s side are desperate to win some points in front of their home crowd, especially after their 2-1 defeat to FC St. Pauli. The FCA head coach sees every game as an important opportunity to assess the team’s progress: “Every weekend is a chance for us to set the benchmark and show that we are better than our opponents,” said Wagner. “We’ve played well in every game so far and should have got more out of them. We want to get our first home win of the season against Mainz.”

The visitors are still waiting for their first win of the season, but managed a surprising sixth-place finish last season which secured them a place in the UEFA Conference League. This makes the support around the stadium even more important. As Wagner puts it,” The stadium can give us a real decisive push and we want the fans to turn the place into a real cauldron of noise and excitement.” The home section of the ground is once again sold out.

Essende back from ban

Wagner has almost all of his squad available to him, with only Anton Kade and Dimitris Giannoulis currently sidelined. Samuel Essende is back in the squad having served his suspension and is an option in the attack, as is Keven Schlotterbeck down the other end. The centre-back made his return to training and is available for the weekend.

“I’ve got a good feeling that we can and will win this game,” said Wagner, who has worked on the game plan with both his coaching staff and his players. “It’s often the little details that make all the difference on the pitch – we found that out last week in Hamburg. In the future, we want to start winning our 50-50s.”
