First press conference as the new FCA head coach

First Team 07.07.2025, 14:30

On Monday morning, Sandro Wagner was officially presented as the new head coach of FC Augsburg. Together with FCA’s CEO Michael Ströll, the 37-year-old answered the media’s questions in a packed-out press room.

Sandro Wagner on…

…his reasons for becoming head coach of FC Augsburg: “I had excellent conversations with the club and really believed in this role at Augsburg. The club gives a serious, down-to-earth impression and is highly ambitious. The setup is fantastic here. Being coach of FCA is amazing and I’m full of pride. There are only 18 coaches in the Bundesliga and I’m one of them now.”

…his targets and aims: “My style is an active approach of football. We won’t measure success primarily on our league position. We want to see the team develop and our fans should enjoy watching us play. The only pressure I feel is the pressure I place on myself, as was the case when I was a player.”

…his personal connection to Augsburg and his start: “I’ve got a few friends in Augsburg and know the city pretty well. I’ve already found a flat in the city centre.”

…his first steps with the players: “I called up every single player after I signed my contract. I will then speak to them all in person after we start training. I already got the feeling that the lads are really open to new ideas.”

…his time with the German national team: “My spell together with Julian Nagelsmann on the Germany coaching staff was extremely valuable. I was able to learn and pick up a number of things. It was a fantastic experience.”

Ströll: “Sandro is a people person, who works meticulously”

FCA CEO Michael Ströll on…

…hiring Sandro Wagner: “Following careful analysis, we came to the decision that we needed a change. We soon were convinced that Sandro Wagner was the right man for the job. Sandro is the perfect match for what we were looking for – he has a clear idea of how he wants this FCA team to play football and fully supports the club’s direction. Sandro is a people person, who works meticulously with a clear plan and way of playing. What particularly impresses me is how motivated he is by developing new players.”

…the future with youngsters: “Noahkai Banks and Mert Kömür have already proven that they can play in the Bundesliga. Our approach of working with academy products continues with them. Sandro Wagner also played a role in the pair of them signing long-term contracts here.”

…targets for the new season: “Our aims are not defined by our position in the league. Instead, we want to focus on developing players and our direction as a club. Our aims have many more facets than just our league position. This is why we’ve distributed responsibility across multiple people and have hired more people to cover more bases for the new season.”
