Wagner: “All our focus is on Leipzig”

First of three home games in a week

FC Augsburg face a busy week ahead, with three home fixtures in quick succession. The first comes on Saturday (15:30 CEST), when the Fuggerstädter host second-placed RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

After beating Wolfsburg 3-1 and drawing 1-1 away to Köln, Augsburg now face a particularly tough test. Leipzig sit second in the table with 16 points. “Leipzig have clear patterns in their play and a lot of individual quality,” said head coach Sandro Wagner. “We take things week by week and analyse our next opponent.” Compared to last week, Wagner hinted at “minor tactical adjustments” and added: “We’ve got ideas about how we can hurt them defensively.”

The schedule remains packed beyond Saturday’s clash. FCA host VfL Bochum in the DFB-Pokal second round on Tuesday, before welcoming Borussia Dortmund to the WWK ARENA next Friday. Wagner, however, is only focused on what lies immediately ahead: “For us, all our focus is on Leipzig and nothing else. We’re fully concentrated on Saturday’s match.”

Wagner will once again be without captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. The defender had recently resumed parts of team training but has had to reduce his workload again this week as he continues his recovery from a knee injury. There was better news for Elvis Rexhbecaj, who is back available after overcoming back problems.

A special atmosphere is also expected at the WWK ARENA on Saturday as the FCA KidsClub celebrates its 15th anniversary. Fittingly, the home section will once again be sold out.
