Four Assists: Niederlechner's night in Sinsheim

First Team 15.12.2019, 16:55

In an outstanding team display on Friday night, one man in particular shone above the rest: Florian Niederlechner set up all four goals against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as FCA ran out 4-2 winners.

Usually, Florian Niederlechner scores the goals himself. Since moving to the club in the summer, he already has seven goals to his name. On Friday night in Sinsheim, the forward did not find the back of the net, but took on a new role as the provider and stole the show: For the first and the last two goals, Niederlechner demonstrated phenomenal vision and accuracy to pick out Max, Jensen and Iago. He also won the penalty in the 51st minute, which Philipp Max stuck away to give Augsburg the 2-1 lead.

This made Florian Niederlechner the first ever Augsburg player to give four assists in one Bundesliga game. "I only really needed to square it each time – fortunately there was always someone making the run with me," he said, modestly. The last player to set up four goals in a single game was Szablocs Huszti at the start of the 2012/13 season. The Hungarian was the provider for all of Hannover’s goals in their 4-0 victory over Wolfsburg. Over seven years later, this feat was finally accomplished again, by none other than Augsburg’s Florian Niederlechner. With eight assists and seven goals to his name this season, the forward is among the best in the league with 15 direct goal involvements.

Aside from this, there were three more ‘firsts’ for Augsburg to celebrate after the game. Iago and Jensen both scored their first ever FCA goal, and the 4-2 win was Augsburg’s first ever Bundesliga victory away to Hoffenheim. In eight previous attempts, there had been four draws and four TSG wins. An all-round successful evening for the club, or, as Niederlechner put it: "Just an awesome game."
