Retro matchday stalemate between FCA and Leipzig

First Team 20.10.2018, 18:33
FC Augsburg have secured a valuable point at home to Europa League participants RB Leipzig on the club’s retro matchday to celebrate 111 years since FCA’s first ever match. In a fiercely contested match with few highlights, both teams suffered from mistakes and were not able to carve out many clear chances. The match ended in a 0-0 stalemate. FCA head coach Manuel Baum made one change from the side that fell to a narrow but spectacular 4-3 defeat away at Borussia Dortmund before the international break. Jonathan Schmid came into the starting lineup at right-back, replacing Raphael Framberger who fell to the bench. After a hectic start, it was the hosts who settled into the match quicker but FCA were unable to create any early chances. Instead, the first talking point of the match came from a Leipzig attack in the 10th minute as referee Tobias Welz awarded the visitors a penalty following a collision between Timo Werner and FCA defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. After a TV review and multiple minutes of consultation with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the decision was overturned and offside given against Werner. After this delay, it took both teams a few minutes to find their rhythm once again and there was no real tempo to the match from either side, inaccuracies letting them down. Kevin Kampl’s long distance shot in the 22nd minute was the closest either side came in the opening half hour. As the match progressed, Leipzig became the stronger side but were unable to find a way through the FCA defence. At the end of the first half, the visitors were dangerous and created a couple of chances to take the lead going into half time. Marcel Halstenberg fired a shot narrowly wide of the far post in the 41st minute before FCA goalkeeper Andreas Luthe made a smart save to deny Jean-Kevin Augustin (43’). At the other end, Michael Gregoritsch won a free-kick in a dangerous position for FCA after a good counter attack. However, the Austrian was only able to fire the ball over the Leipzig bar in the last chance of the opening half (45+4’). Fragmented build-up leads to few chances After half-time, the match remained highly competitive and it was the visitors who came out as the slightly stronger side with more possession. The first chance of the second half fell to the lively Augustin in the 52nd minute but he was unable to test Luthe in the FCA goal. There were few highlights in the remainder of the match and Luthe was there to deny visitors whenever they did carve out a chance to score. The goalkeeper made a smart flying save to tip a Halstenberg free-kick over the bar in 61st minute before being called into action once again to deny Leipzig captain Willi Orban from a header (77’). FCA continued to defend well but lost possession of the ball on too many occasions to pose a dangerous threat in front of the Leipzig goal. However, FCA did start to press forwards in the final stages of the match and created some dangerous chances. Gregoritsch managed to get on the end of a Phillip Max corner in the 81st minute but he couldn’t force his header towards goal. The Austrian then did managed to fire the ball into the back of the net, but his goal was disallowed for offside. FCA were fortunate not to concede in the 91st minute as a Leipzig free-kick fell to Orban in the six yard box, but the Hungarian could only poke the ball wide of the far post (90+1’). This proved to be the best chance of the match, although Andre Hahn did go close in the final play of the match, header millimeters wide of the post (90+4’). FCA’s retro matchday ended in a goalless draw in front of a sold out crowd in the WWK ARENA and the side return to action next Saturday with an away trip to Hannover 96 (15:30 CEST).
