Vargas hoping to reach round of 16

Another draw for Córdova

First Team 21.06.2021, 10:05

The group stage of the UEFA EURO 2020 is drawing to a close. FCA’s Ruben Vargas celebrated a 3-1 win over Turkey in his final group stage game with Switzerland, but will have to wait and see if their four points are enough to see them through to the round of 16. Meanwhile, Sergio Córdoba had to settle for another draw at the Copa América.

On Friday, the Czech Republic faced Croatia in their second group stage match. Despite dominating, the Czechs failed to create any clear chances on goal. After a foul from Dejan Lovren on Patrik Schick, the referee awarded the Czechs a penalty. Schick stepped up to take it and put his side in the lead (37’). The lead wouldn’t last long, however, as Ivan Perisic scored off an Andrej Kramaric free-kick just after the break to level the scores (47’). FCA goalkeeper Tomáš Koubek was an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw. On Tuesday evening (21:00 CEST), the Czech Republic will close out the group stage against England.

Meanwhile, Switzerland played their final group stage match on Sunday evening, beating Turkey 3-1. Haris Seferovic opened the scoring for the Swiss in the 6th minute, before Xherdan Shaqiri added a second (36’). After the change of ends, Irfan Can Kahveci cut the deficit with a long-range strike (62’). Minutes later, Shaqiri would add his second of the night (66’) to restore Switzerland’s two-goal advantage. Seven minutes later, Ruben Vargas came off the bench to replace Shaqiri. Despite the win, Switzerland will have to wait for results elsewhere to see whether or not they will advance to the round of 16 as one of the top four third-placed sides.

Venezuela record another draw at the Copa América

Sergio Córdova and Venezuela were also in action on Sunday evening, as they faced Ecuador in the Copa América. Ecuador opened the scoring in the 39th minute through Ayrton Preciado, with Edson Castillo levelling the scores just minutes later (51’). Córdova then came off the bench in the 57th minute. Ecuador later re-took the lead through Gonzalo Plata in the 71st minute, before Ronald Hernandez made it 2-2 in added time (90’+1). Venezuela’s next game will be against Peru on Sunday (27th June, 23:00 CEST).
