After establishing himself as a key player at FC Augsburg, Felix Uduokhai was given the chance to lead the team onto the field as captain for the game against VfB Stuttgart. The 23-year old defender was extremely grateful for this opportunity.

“It’s a great honour and I’m thankful for the trust placed in me,” said Felix Uduokhai on what he felt once he was told he would captain the side two days before the game against VfB Stuttgart (1-4), with Jeffrey Gouweleeuw suspended. Nevertheless, the captain’s armband didn’t change too much on the pitch for the 23-year-old. “I always try and take on responsibility to help the team. It’s just more important that you do this if you’re captaining the side.”

Uduokhai has now been at FC Augsburg for a year and a half, signing permanently in the summer from VfL Wolfsburg after a loan spell. The German has now established himself as a key man in the side, even being called up for the national team. His progress has been admirable, and he believes a lot of it is down to FCA: “Young players can prosper here at the club. We can work on ourselves without any huge pressure and continue to develop.” One trait that Uduokhai has managed to always keep is his down-to-earth nature. “I’m just pleased to be part of this team. The most important thing is that we have success as a side.”

Heiko Herrlich’s side are back in action this Saturday against SV Werder Bremen (16th January, 15:30 CET). “We have to put things right after the last game and we want to get at them,” stated Uduokhai.
