Uduokhai: "I’m ready for the fight“

First Team 01.10.2020, 11:37

Felix Uduokhai scored his maiden Bundesliga goal for FC Augsburg in the 2-0 home win over Borussia Dortmund. Ahead of the trip to Wolfsburg (Sunday, 4th October, 15:30 CEST), the defender spoke about the perfect start to the season, the return of the fans and facing his former club.

Two games, two wins – it’s been a historic start to the season for FC Augsburg. After beating Union Berlin 3-1 on the opening day, FCA picked up a 2-0 win at home to Dortmund to record back-to-back victories at the start of a Bundesliga season for the first time ever.

“We were desperate to win and we got the three points,” summed up Felix Uduokhai. “We are all happy to have been a part of things so far. Now we want to carry on.” FCA have only let in one goal across their three competitive games this term. “The whole team has defended well. We have worked as a team and all 11 players have defended together,” stressed Uduokhai.

Saturday’s win over BVB was also a special day for the centre back as he scored his first goal for the club, heading home a Daniel Caligiuri free kick to make it 1-0. “My main job is to defend, help the team and provide stability. Of course I want to be dangerous at set pieces – we’ve worked on them in training. Scoring from one was great.”

Uduokhai: "Football lives off the fans"

Another positive from the match with Dortmund was the partial return of fans in the WWK Arena. Around 6,000 fans made plenty of noise as they got behind the team. “After the game, I thought: What would have happened if the goal had been scored with no fans there? Football lives off the fans.”

Uduokhai signed permanently for FC Augsburg after spending last season on loan from VfL Wolfsburg. “By the end, it wasn’t clear if things would be possible, also because of the coronavirus crisis. Therefore I was even happier that I made this step. I’m proud to be here,” said the 23-year-old.

The former Wolfsburg man will therefore take on his old teammates this matchday. “I’m really looking forward to it and I’m ready for the fight. It will be a hard-fought game and we will need to give 100%.”
