Training camp kicks off with double session
FC Augsburg completed their first day of training in Malta on Monday. Martin Schmidt’s team set up shop on the well-maintained pitches at the training ground next to the national team stadium in the heart of Malta.
Alfred Finnbogason, Marek Suchý, Felix Götze and Carlos Gruezo, all injured before the winter break, were involved in the session. Raphael Framberger, meanwhile, completed an individual training session next to the main pitch.
"You could tell from the first session that the team were really up for the second half of the season. The team are more used to each other than in the summer and we could continue working on things that we picked up before the winter break," said Martin Schmidt. “The training conditions here are great, the hotel too. Everything suits us here."
Knee injury for Simon Asta
The session ended on a sour note, however, when youth player Simon Asta fell to the ground in agony during a drill. Immediately helped off the pitch by team doctor Dr, Florian Elsa and other physios, he was taken straight to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a cruciate ligament injury.
The afternoon session took place in the national stadium’s fitness room. "After the training camp, we go back into normal Bundesliga mode," the head coach told. "For that reason, we are working on getting the players in top shape for the season restart."
