Thorup: “The last impression stays in your mind for a long time”
The post-match reaction to the season finale against Union Berlin
On the final Bundesliga matchday of the 2024/25 season, FC Augsburg suffered a bitter last-minute defeat. We gathered the reaction to the 2–1 loss against Union Berlin.
Phillip Tietz: “It’s incredibly tough to go into the summer break like this. We actually had more of the game, but defended poorly twice – and Union Berlin punished that ruthlessly. We, on the other hand, should’ve made better use of our chances. I especially feel sorry for the fans, who’ve supported us over all 34 matchdays. There was definitely more in this season – especially in the first half of the campaign, where we let too much slip. The second half of the season was really strong, apart from the last four games. One thing is for sure: next year will be our 15th consecutive season in the Bundesliga.”
Finn Dahmen: “We really weren't smart today, especially in the 94th minute. Of course we wanted to win it late on, but you’ve still got to keep your defensive shape. Right now, the end of the season feels pretty rubbish, but with a bit of time, I’ll probably be able to look back positively on my individual season. Since the winter break, we’ve delivered some really strong performances, which makes it even more painful that we ended on such a negative run. We were well in the game today, had set out our approach clearly, and for the most part the performance was decent. But we simply had to score a second goal – that was the key moment. And the goals we conceded simply shouldn’t happen.”
Fredrik Jensen: “The last few days have been very emotional for me. My parents flew over just for my final game – that means the world to me. I’ve made so many memories during these seven years here; it really has been the time of my life. Of course, I’ve had a lot of injuries in my career – that’s part of it – but I’ve spent seven years in the Bundesliga. I’m very thankful for that and, to be honest, a little proud as well. I came here on my own back then – now I’m leaving with my wife, my daughter, and soon we’ll welcome our second daughter into the world. At some point, you know the time comes to move on. I wish the lads here nothing but the best and lots of success in the future. But today, I just want to enjoy the evening with my family, the club, and my teammates. After that, I’m open to new things and looking to the future with optimism.”
Jess Thorup: “This isn’t how we imagined our last home game. Of course, we wanted to go into the summer break with a win. For the first 65 to 70 minutes we were in control of the game and took the lead. But we knew Union would wait for their counter-attacking moments, and we didn’t defend them well. That’s why you end up losing a game like this – one you simply shouldn’t lose after going 1–0 up. That’s frustrating. A big thank you goes to our fans, who supported us right to the final whistle. Right now, we’re very disappointed with the result, and it’s hard to take a step back and see the bigger picture – the final impression always stays in your mind for a long time.”
Steffen Baumgart (1. FC Union Berlin head coach): “If we’re being honest, today we saw a game where maybe the better team didn’t win. Augsburg had more of the play for long stretches and also the better chances, which my team defended well. All in all, we’re just happy we came out on top today, but we know how to put the win into perspective – especially since the winner came in the final minute.”
