Successful friendly during the international break

Beljo scores hat-trick in 5-2 win against Jahn Regensburg

First Team 16.11.2023, 16:33

FC Augsburg made use of the international break with a friendly against SSV Jahn Regensburg. FCA ran out 5-2 winners in the clash against the second-placed side from the third division.

FCA head coach Jess Thorup had to do without six international in total for the friendly against Regensburg, which simultaneously meant that four players from the U23 were in the squad.

It took just 24 seconds for FCA to open their account. FCA striker Dion Beljo gave his side an early lead after a one-two with Masaya Okugawa. Regensburg then got their first of the afternoon as Jonas Bauer scored to level things up at 1-1 (13’). However, it didn’t take long for FCA to restore their lead. Okugawa, who had to be taken off soon after, was taken out in the penalty area in the 20th minute. Beljo converted the following penalty as he grabbed his second of the game. The game continued to be an end-to-end exchange, with Regensburg equalising once again through a goal from Christian Schmidt (38’). However, as has often been the case, Thorup’s side showed morale as Sven Michel made it 3-2 with an effort from distance (40’).

FCA put the game to bed in the second half

FCA U23 players David Deger and Daniel Hausmann came on at half-time. The latter looked dangerous immediately, picking up the ball on the edge of the Regensburg box in the 46th minute, before setting up Augsburg’s fourth goal five minutes later. He put the ball on a plate for Beljo, who smashed home from close range to complete his hattrick (51’). Beljo continued to cause problems for the Regensburg defence and had more chances to score in the 68th and 69th minute. FCA’s continued pressure finally paid off in the 82nd minute as they made it 5-2. After a quick counterattack, Sven Michel squared the ball to Hausmann, who was a real standout, and the youth player poked the ball home. FCA are back in Bundesliga action on Saturday, 25th November (15:30 CET) as they make the trip to 1. FC Union Berlin for matchday 12 of the season.
