September: First win of the season against Frankfurt

Club 31.12.2019, 10:00

The year 2019 is coming to an end - a good time to take a look at twelve exciting and emotional months full of ups and downs. Looking back at September: the first win of the season, the last game at the Schwarzwaldstadion and good news from the general meeting.

Just a few days after signing for the club, Felix Uduokhai went straight into the starting lineup for the away game at Werder Bremen. The hosts took the lead twice, but FCA showed their resiliency and two goals from Ruben Vargas put the visitors back on level terms. In the end however, Augsburg succumbed to a 3-2 defeat, having been forced to play without Stephan Lichtsteiner for almost an hour after he was sent off.

“We fought right to the end and I still maintain we’re on the right track,” explained coach Martin Schmidt, whose side went into the international break with only one point from their first three games. Tim Rieder was also loaned out to TSV 1860 Munich shortly before the end of the transfer window.

Richter and Niederlechner score in first win

After the two-week break, Augsburg hosted Eintracht Frankfurt at the WWK-ARENA. FCA put in a convincing performance, especially in the first half, and led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Marco Richter and Florian Niederlechner. After a hard-fought game, the team managed to see out a 2-1 win, and in doing so picked up their first three points of the season. “The fire has been lit,” said a relieved Schmidt. The success gave the team confidence, and in Freiburg, FCA managed to get a 1-1 draw in their last visit to the old Schwarzwaldstadion. After Freiburg took the lead, it was ex-Freiburg player Niederlechner who equalised.

At the general meeting, managing director Michael Ströll announced some good figures for the club in their eighth year of the Bundesliga. Manfred Ringer was also elected as a new member of the Supervisory Board after the death of Peter Bircks last year. In terms of football though, the month ended on a rather sour note. FCA lost 0-3 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen after some suspect goals, extending their 17-game drought without a win against the ‘Werkself’.
