September: FCA make their best-ever start

2020 Year in Review

2020 was a year shaped by the coronavirus pandemic, although FCA still managed to have a successful year, securing their Bundesliga status for a tenth successive year. We're taking a look back at everything that's happened over the last 12 months in our Year in Review. In September, FCA made their best-ever start to a Bundesliga season with two wins.

As the start of the season edged closer, final moves were being made in the transfer market. After five years in Augsburg, Philipp Max joined PSV Eindhoven, whilst Georg Teigl moved back home, signing for Austria Vienna. In terms of incomings, Augsburg signed young right-back Robert Gumny from Lech Posen. The final friendly of pre-season came too soon for the new signing, however, as FCA lost 1-0 away to Ajax.

The first competitive game of the season went much better. FCA didn’t mess around against fifth-division side MTV Eintracht Celle, winning 7-0 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Augsburg led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Ruben Vargas and Daniel Caligiuri, and Alfred Finnbogason, Florian Niederlechner, André Hahn and Fredrik Jensen made it a comprehensive victory in the second half. Two substitutes took the headlines above all; Hahn came off the bench to score and make three assists, whilst Jensen scored a brace in less than two minutes at the end of the game.

FCA surprise last year’s runners-up Dortmund

After getting the season underway, FCA began their tenth Bundesliga campaign a week later. They proved to be ruthlessly effective in the opener away to 1. FC Union Berlin, winning 3-1. Vargas scored his first goal of the season, and, after Union got a late equaliser, Michael Gregoritsch put Augsburg back in front and Hahn put the icing on the cake. “It’s probably the best bench FCA have had in years,” said Gregoritsch after Augsburg got only their second opening-day win in the Bundesliga.

The U23s also returned to action after a break lasting half a year. Head coach Sepp Steinberger’s side put in a top performance in the League Cup, beating VfR Garching 6-0.

The first home game of the new season saw Borussia Dortmund make the trip to Bavaria. About 6,000 fans were there to back the home side, which was the first time in over seven months that they were allowed in the stadium. Augsburg had just 20% possession, but that was enough to record a not undeserved 2-0 win. Felix Uduokhai put his side in the lead just before the break with a header, and Caligiuri made it two in the second half. “It felt like it was a full house,” said the new signing, praising the fans as Augsburg made their best-ever start to a Bundesliga season.
