Schmidt: "We can take a lot of positives from that performance"

First Team 03.11.2019, 17:18

Despite a committed performance, Augsburg were not rewarded against Schalke at home on Sunday evening, and lost 3-2. “There are always setbacks, but we learn in every game,” head coach Martin Schmidt said after the match. Read the full post-match reactions below.

Stephan Lichtsteiner:  “We played really well, but unfortunately lost in the end. That’s football sometimes. We played really well, we can’t really be accused of a lot, but we did not reward ourselves for the time and effort we put in. “

Daniel Baier:  “Today was easily our best first half so far, but we can’t slip up like we did at the end. We have almost no good record against Schalke, then go in at the break 1-1 and even go back in the lead. After the score was 2-1 we didn’t manage to take our chances. But I do not want to blame Reece Oxford for anything that happened.  We win as a team and lose as a team.”

Alfred Finnbogason: “We clearly dominated the first half and just needed to score more. Schalke had few opportunities in the game and still managed to score three times. It’s up to us to work hard and beat Paderborn next time. There were a lot of good things to see on the pitch today, but we just have to be able to play like that over 90 minutes."

Martin Schmidt:  “We played well during the first half, but weren’t rewarded for it. We let our opponents find their way back into the match by conceding twice from a set piece. The third goal was a gift. But, some of the blame for the loss lies with our attack, as we should have been 2-0 or even 3-0 up before halftime. Schalke increased the pressure after we made it 2-1. You have the feeling that we played well for long periods of the match. We learn something from every match and will improve from week to week. You will always experience setbacks. We cannot afford to concede two set-piece goals like that. But, we can pull plenty of positives from our performance today.”

David Wagner:  “As expected, it was a tough match. We didn’t get off to a good start because Augsburg were extremely strong, won several challenges and didn’t allow us much space. We had to make some changes at the back after Sané was taken off injured. Overall, we fielded a pretty young team tonight. Augsburg played well, which is why I’m extremely pleased with the mentality the boys displayed tonight. We found our back into the match using set pieces. Based on the game as a whole, we were lucky to walk away with a win, but it’s not undeserved, as we fought hard all night.”
