Schmidt: “We played well enough not to lose”

First Team 29.02.2020, 16:53

It was a great game after half time but FC Augsburg suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Borussia Mönchengladbach. “We were good mentally in the second half,” said the Augsburg coach. We collected all the reactions after the game.

Florian Niederlechner: “We threw everything we had into this game, so to lose is a bit gutting, We made a few mistakes today, but we can definitely take a lot out of this game going forward. We earned at least a point, Alfred had a chance to give us that at the end but just missed by centimetres. The Gladbach just took their chances at the other end.”

Marco Richter: “Gladbach are strong opponents, but we did well against them today. We conceded two stupid goals after the break, but every time we came back at them. It’s been happening too often that we concede just after half time, and it’s always difficult to recover when we do. Despite that, we can still take a lot out of this game, we played well and reacted in a decent manner to what happened in the reverse fixture. We can build on this performance.”

Eduard Löwen: “We gave it everything we had today. We earned at least a point. Of course it’s always nice to be among the goals because it gives me confidence, but today it’s overshadowed a bit by the defeat. The game in Munich will probably be the most difficult one we’ll have all year but we can take a lot of confidence from our performance today.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We made two mistakes today and were punished both times - that was the difference today. We created a lot of chances but didn’t score enough goals. We played against one of the top teams in the league today though, so we can’t look at this game too negatively.”

Phillip Max: “We still have a bit of a cushion with regards to the relegation zone, but we can never be too sure. We can’t afford to concede two goals in the manner that we did today. In the end we should’ve got at least a point, but we were only there or thereabouts with an equaliser, we need to be more clinical.”

Martin Schmidt: “We were solid in the first half, we barely let them have anything. After half time though, they changed around a bit and we had to spend a few minutes figuring them out. We were then punished for making a couple of mistakes, but we didn’t simply lie down and we played well enough not to lose. We were good mentally in the second half. Gladbach had a few chances on the counter, but we could’ve easily found an equaliser.”
