Schmidt: “This victory will do us good”

First Team 07.12.2019, 19:41

With their 2-1 home win against Mainz 05, FCA picked up their third win in four games. “I am satisfied with the chances we had, but not so much with our recovery,” said head coach Martin Schmidt after the game. Below are the full post-match reactions.

Daniel Baier:  “The win is richly-deserved. In the first half hour we played with blistering pace. Unfortunately it is the case in football that sometimes the ball just won’t go in the back of the net. It was not easy to take, but we showed grit. We believed in ourselves and made a huge difference to the game.

Marco Richter: “I can’t remember as gilt-edged a chance as I had to score in the first half. The team’s reaction immediately afterwards spurred me on. We just kept believing that we could turn the game around. We’ve shown what we are capable of over the last few weeks, but there is still a lot of work to do before Christmas. We have to really give our all against Hoffenheim on Friday.”

Florian Niederlechner: “In the first half we played really great football which really set the pace, But we failed to score and then fell behind. It was a hugely deserved victory and a great team performance. I am really proud of my team. Ruben Vargas and Marco Richter did a great job on the flanks but we were a good side across the whole pitch.”

Martin Schmidt:  “I am happy with the result, but unhappy with the second half. I’m satisfied with the chances, but dissatisfied with our recovery. Nonetheless, this victory will do us good. We have taken ten points from our last four games, which is an incredible run of form. We are always working to improve further. 17 points is good for us, but we’re not stopping here. The win is deserved, but we’re already looking ahead to Friday.”

Achim Beierlorzer: “The loss is very hard to take. We were caught napping in the first half and gave away too many chances. We then took the lead through a wonder strike but could have fallen behind just before that. If we go into the break losing 3-1 and then lose, then we will just get over it. Overall it was a deserved win, but for me it was not a penalty, so losing is quite bitter. We will continue to work on the things that have distinguished us recently.”
