Schmidt: “I can’t fault the team”

The Augsburg players left the field extremely disappointed after a turbulent 90 minutes. Despite leading 3-1 at one time, BVB ran out 5-3 winners. “We were in a good position to take something from the game,” said head coach Martin Schmidt after the game.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We played really well in the first half, but we shouldn’t have been so open after making it 3-1. It would have been better if we had relied on our strengths on the break. That mistake cost us the points in the end, as we knew that Dortmund would get more and more dangerous.”

Ruben Vargas: “I’m really disappointed because we played brilliantly in the first half and I can’t really explain why we lost that game. We’ll look ahead now and concentrate on our next game.”

Florian Niederlechner: “I don’t know why the video assistant didn’t intervene when I was clearly fouled in the box. So many things get checked, so it would have been nice for this one to have been reviewed as well. My opponent even admitted that he caught me after the game. We were the better side for a lot of the game and can take a lot of positives. We’ll analyse what went wrong and what we can do better next time out.”

Philipp Max: “Our first-half display was really good and we were in the ascendancy after making it 2-0 just after the break. We didn’t defend well though and will have to make sure we learn from our mistakes today.”

Marco Richter: “It’s a disappointing loss because we started so well. You could see that we all gave 100% and played with real fight and passion. The quality that they were able to bring off the bench was perhaps the decisive factor today. We’re a great team, which we showed today and we will prove again in the future.”

Martin Schmidt: “We were in a good position to take something from the game. We worked hard in the first hour and didn’t let them play the way they wanted to. We played football our way during that period. Their second goal unsettled us, and we were a bit reckless at times. I can’t fault the team though. We should have defended better, but a team with that quality will always push us to our limits. We’ve now got a few important games coming up”.

Lucien Favre: “It was a crazy game. We should have led in the first half as we had a number of great chances. Their goal was a gift and the two that came after the break were also totally avoidable. Our second goal gave us a push and they took a lot of risks. To come from 3-1 down to win 5-1 is mad. Congratulations to the team for scoring five goals against a good side.”
