Schmidt: "At the end of the day, a draw is a fair result”

First Team 25.08.2019, 09:41
In their first home game of the 2019/2020 season, Augsburg were held to a 1-1 draw by Union Berlin. FCA head coach Martin Schmidt spoke of a “fair draw” after the match. You can read the full match reactions below. Alfred Finnbogason: “I was very happy to come back into the team and play here in front of our fans. It was very fun for me, but we of course wanted to get the win today. We must be content today that we got a point and I hope that we can get more than one next week.” Stephan Lichtsteiner: “We are disappointed that we only got a point but I think that we can get a few more next week. We were quite good over long periods today, but we need to work harder on our teamwork." Ruben Vargas: “I’m obviously delighted to score my first Bundesliga goal, but the team comes first and it’s a shame that we couldn’t get the three points today. The goal we conceded was very unlucky, but we have to stay positive and keep working at it.” Florian Niederlechner: “I think that we deserved to win because of how many chances we had. After we took the lead we conceded a really stupid goal. But I am confident because we have a good squad, which is now complete and we know that we need to continue to get better together.” Philipp Max: “We gave the opposition too many chances, but we had luck on our side. But, Union Berlin were the same and we had chances of our own and could have gone 2-0 up. So I think a draw is fair, even though it is hard to take because they equalised from a counter-attack”. Martin Schmidt: “I think it was a fair result, because both teams had their moments. It was a very scrappy first half hour, so it wouldn’t have been great to watch. In the second half we got a lot better and we took the lead. It was a shame that we were unable to get the second goal. Union Berlin put us under lots of pressure and eventually got their goal. Because we had an extra man near the end of the match we could have snatched a winner, but I think at the end of the day a draw is a fair result. We need more time and we need to keep working at it.” Urs Fischer: “I am happy for the boys, because many of them played well over 90 minutes. We had a way into the game from the beginning and have a lot of confidence as a result. But we didn’t take our chances and so ended up going 1-0 down. FCA could have gone 2-0 up, but my team never gave up and I’m happy with the result.”
