Rieder: “We made it too easy for Leipzig to score”

Reaction to the defeat in Leipzig

FC Augsburg took an early lead against RB Leipzig but made too many mistakes and ultimately fell to defeat despite scoring twice. Here’s the reaction to the game.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We started the game well and taking the lead should have given us confidence. But after that, we made things far too easy for Leipzig and had a lot of problems down our right-hand side in particular. If we don’t stay compact and leave too much space, it’s very difficult against a team with that much quality. Overall, we simply weren’t good enough today. We’re going through a difficult spell at the moment and need to show more fight and defend with greater determination. Now we have to focus on ourselves, keep working hard and find a way out of this together.”

Fabian Rieder: “We were too careless in the key moments today and made it far too easy for Leipzig to score. Scoring twice shows that we have the quality, but we need to be more disciplined and composed throughout the 90 minutes. We need to battle harder, show more character and work to turn our luck around.”

Manuel Baum: “We started well and had enough opportunities from counter-attacks to score a second goal. At the moment, we’re wasting too many of those opportunities, while at the other end we’re conceding cheap goals far too easily. Especially after the break, I felt we were on top, but then we made things too easy for Leipzig again. We shouldn’t overreact to our current run of form, but we can’t pretend everything is fine either. We need to keep scoring goals while cutting down on the number we concede, and stop overthinking things on the pitch.”

Martín Demichelis: “I was really pleased with the way we stuck to our game plan after conceding so early. The team stayed calm and managed to score three goals in the first half. As a coach, that’s very satisfying.”
