Pace and promise on the left: Meet Hennes Behrens

In Hennes Behrens, FC Augsburg have signed another young player with Bundesliga experience and plenty of scope for development. The 21-year-old arrives from TSG Hoffenheim and is expected to add fresh impetus on the left.
Born in Frankfurt am Main, Behrens spent time in the academies of Rot-Weiß Walldorf, 1. FSV Mainz 05 and SV Darmstadt 98 before moving to Hoffenheim in 2020. His development continued to gather pace there.
In 2023/24, he won both the German U19 championship and the Youth DFB-Pokal with Hoffenheim’s U19s. A year later, he helped Hoffenheim II win the Regionalliga Südwest title and earn promotion to the 3. Liga. At the same time, Behrens also made the step up to the first team, coming on in the 62nd minute of a 3-1 defeat in Leverkusen to make his Bundesliga debut.
The most important step in his career to date, however, came during the second half of last season with 1. FC Heidenheim. Behrens made 16 appearances during his loan spell, scoring once and providing two assists. He particularly impressed on the left with his pace, attacking intent and accurate crossing. The fact that he completed the full 90 minutes on 13 occasions underlined his importance to the side. Although Heidenheim were relegated, Behrens used those months to prove that he belongs at Bundesliga level.
Qualities as a wing-back
That profile is precisely what makes him an attractive addition for FCA. Behrens can play in a number of roles on the left, works reliably without the ball and is also capable of making an impact going forward. His qualities as a wing-back are particularly suited to systems featuring a back three or five.
FCA sporting director Benni Weber is equally confident in the signing and particularly praised Behrens’ “physical attributes and ability on the ball”. The 21-year-old also has clear ambitions for his new challenge: “FC Augsburg offer me the perfect conditions to continue developing and take the next step in my career.”
Things moved quickly for the new signing after he put pen to paper on Monday. Just a short while later, Behrens was already out on the training pitch with his new teammates. His first appearance in an FCA shirt could come as early as Saturday, when Augsburg face a Swabian XI in a friendly at the Rosenaustadion.
