November: Shock win against Bayern

Review of the year 2021, part 11

As the new year comes in, FC Augsburg are taking a look back over the last 12 months. Next up in the review of the year: November.

Following the big win against VfB Stuttgart, FCA got back on the road looking for a first away win of the campaign, but coming away empty-handed against VfL Wolfsburg. The Wolves won 1-0, but there was an added blow for FCA as Tobias Strobl tore his ACL during the game. Yet another bit of bad news came during the following international break, as sporting CEO Stefan Reuter tested positive for Covid-19 and entered quarantine.

In a sporting sense, the international break gave Swiss internationals Ruben Vargas and Andi Zeqiri cause for celebration. Fighting against EURO 2020 winners Italy for World Cup qualification, the “Nati” came through and qualified automatically for Qatar 2022. Vargas also scored in the decisive 4-0 win against Bulgaria.

That joy then turned into frustration for Vargas, as he had to miss out on the home game against FC Bayern München due to a positive Corona test following his return to Augsburg.

Late equaliser at Hertha

Vargas’ colleagues then did what nobody thought they would be able to do and shocked the footballing world. A passionate performance saw FCA beat FC Bayern 2-1 for their third win of the season. Mads Pedersen gave the home side the lead with his first Bundesliga goal, before André Hahn doubled the advantage with his first goal of the season. Bayern did half the deficit, but in a strong defensive performance, the Fuggerstädter held on to secure a narrow win.

Ahead of the following game at Hertha BSC, there were changes in central defence, as both the injured Reece Oxford and the positive-tested captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw missed out. That meant Frederik Winther celebrated his Bundesliga debut, but saw his side go behind just before half time through former Augsburger Marco Richter. FCA did not give up, though, and found an equaliser through Michael Gregoritsch in the seventh minute of injury time.
