November: FCA come from behind twice

2020 Review of the Year

2020 was a year shaped by the coronavirus pandemic, although FCA still managed to have a successful year, securing their Bundesliga status for a tenth successive year. Augsburg came from behind twice in November, despite being down to ten men in one of those games.

After a home win over Mainz, FCA hosted Hertha BSC. Ahead of the game with the Berliners, Felix Uduokhai was called up to the Germany squad for the first time by national coach Joachim Löw. Nonetheless, the Fuggerstädter had a disappointing day against Hertha, losing 3-0.

Uduokhai didn’t appear in any of the international games during the break, while Alfred Finnbogason and Iceland missed out on qualification for next summer’s EUROS after losing 2-1 to Hungary in the play-offs.

Ten-men FCA equalise in Gladbach

Augsburg’s first game after the final international break of the year was away to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Foals took the lead early on and FCA suffered another blow shortly after the break, with Raphael Framberger seeing a second yellow just 12 minutes after coming on. Heiko Herrlich’s side didn’t give up though and Daniel Caligiuri equalised late on to seal a point. “It was a really determined performance”, praised Herrlich after the game.

The next home game also saw Augsburg come from behind in a 1-1 draw. This time, Ruben Vargas scored a late goal in a hard-fought battle. This was Augsburg’s sixth goal (out of 11 in total) in the final 11 minutes of games.
