Focusing on menstrual hygiene

Social 17.06.2026, 14:00

As part of the Football4WASH project, a special action day focusing on menstrual hygiene was held in May. Around 400 students took part in the event, with approximately 100 of them also participating in the accompanying netball tournament. Together with Viva con Agua and with the support of the German Football League (DFL), the day focused on education, inclusion, and practical support for girls in their everyday school lives.

For many girls in South Africa, menstruation is still associated with significant challenges. Limited access to hygiene products, a lack of education, and social taboos often result in girls missing school or refraining from sports activities. This is exactly where the action day came in, offering an open and empowering approach that encouraged girls to ask questions, share experiences, and confidently take their place in school, sports, and their communities.

Sivuyile Tembani, Programme Manager of Football4WASH at Viva con Agua, highlighted the importance of the project: “This work is ultimately about making sure that girls feel supported and included. When a girl misses school because she does not have access to hygiene products, the impact goes far beyond a single day of lessons. We want girls to be able to participate fully in school life, sports, and their communities without shame and without barriers.”

The programme was complemented by the distribution of 400 hygiene kits containing essential hygiene products, providing direct support in the daily lives of many participants.

About the “Football4WASH” Project

With a special connection to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Augsburg Water Management System and in recognition of the crucial role water plays in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, FC Augsburg has made water a central focus of its sustainability strategy. During the club’s summer training camp in South Africa in 2024, FC Augsburg, together with Viva con Agua, launched the Football4WASH project in the Mpumalanga Province and continues to support it on a long-term basis.

The educational project for children and young people combines the topics of water, sanitation, and hygiene with exercises from football training. The German Football League (DFL) also supports the project.
