Metaxas: “We played as a team”

Post-match reaction to the 0-0 draw in Wolfsburg

First Team 04.10.2020, 18:33

FC Augsburg have now kept clean sheets in consecutive visits to Wolfsburg. “Our defence was good, but we have some room to improve on offence,” said assistant coach Iraklis Metaxas. We’ve put together all the post-match reaction to Sunday’s 0-0 draw in Wolfsburg.

Daniel Caligiuri: “It’s a strong point for us and I think that it was deserved, based on the performance. The game could have gone either way. We had some good chances during the first half, while Wolfsburg had some before the break and during the second half. Of course, it’s too bad that Heiko Herrlich couldn’t be here, but we knew what to expect because we were well-prepared. That was evident today. Having seven points from three games is a great thing for us. We want to continue the way we have been.”

Rafal Gikiewicz: “On the one hand, we’re happy. On the other, we could have also won the game because we had several good chances where we just lacked that final pass. Overall, we made life difficult for Wolfsburg and kept a clean sheet. The season is far from over and there’s a way to go still for us to improve on how we did last season.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “It was a tough game. Wolfsburg played a bit better, but we defended well and had some good chances of our own. Rafal Gikiewicz made a couple crucial saves today. Looking at the fixtures we had to start the season, we can be very happy with having taken seven points from those games. Now, it’s about remaining focused over the course of the international break.”

Iraklis Metaxas: “The result is good, we defended well, but we had some room to improve on offence. But, it’s also a difficult task to maintain the same efficiency we had in our most recent matches. At the end of both halves we weren’t really able to maintain possession and allowed our opponents some chances. Heiko Herrlich was in touch right away after the game and congratulated us on the draw. He drew similar conclusions from the game and would have made the same substitutions we did. That shows that we have a similar way of thinking and harmony within the team. I was especially pleased to see that we played as a team. That’s also represented by the fact that we are unbeaten in our last four games, if you include the DFB-Pokal.”

Oliver Glasner: “We’re not pleased with the result, but definitely with the performance today. We took control of the game after 20 minutes and had several good chances and looked threatening in front of goal. It’s too bad that we had a goal disallowed, but overall it was a strong team performance. We can be pleased with it, after having had seven games in the last three weeks.”
