May: First team and Under 23s celebrate staying up

Club 28.12.2019, 17:47

The year 2019 is coming to an end - a good time to take a look at twelve exciting and emotional months full of ups and downs. Looking back at May: two FCA teams celebrated staying up at the end of the season and the first team suffered their heaviest defeat in Bundesliga history.

May began unspectacularly after such a turbulent April. FCA were already safe from relegation before their game at Schalke 04 because VfB Stuttgart lost the day before, so Augsburg were able to begin planning for their ninth year in the Bundesliga. Schalke were also almost safe, so both teams took few risks and the game finished 0-0.

Before the last home game of the season against Hertha BSC, FCA said goodbye to Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker, Christoph Janker and Dong-Won Ji. On the pitch, the match was spectacular. FCA took the lead three times through a goal from Andre Hahn and a brace from Michael Gregoritsch, but Hertha managed to equalise each time, and it was the visitors who went on to win the match. The game ended with a 4-3 loss for the home side as they conceded a controversial penalty in added time. After the tough home defeat Martin Schmidt said, “We still have a lot of work ahead of us.”

An historic loss for the first team – U23s celebrate staying up

It would get much worse for FCA fans in the final game of the season. Away at VfL Wolfsburg the team had a shocking day and lost 8-1. It was Augsburg’s heaviest defeat in Bundesliga history. However, the U23s provided some good news for the fans, as their 1-1 draw against Viktoria Aschaffenburg on the last day of the Regionalliga Bayern season meant that they too would stay in their division.

While the old Bundesliga season came to a bitter end, the new one was already beginning. Three long-time FCA players, Konstantinos Stafylidis (Hoffenheim), Ja-Cheol Koo (Al-Gharafa) and Jonathan Schmid (Freiburg) left the club, while the club presented Florian Niederlechner from Freiburg as the first new signing for the coming season.
