Maaßen: “Will pick ourselves back up and analyse the game”

Post-match reaction to defeat against Freiburg

First Team 06.08.2022, 19:00

FC Augsburg suffered a 4-0 defeat to SC Freiburg on the first matchday of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season. Read on for all the post-match reaction to the season opener.

André Hahn:
"The first half wasn’t bad, even if we were lacking that final pass at times. We wanted to do much better in the second half, but conceded two quick goals instead. Overall it’s a tough way to start the new season, but we need to pick ourselves up and stay positive.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: "It was evenly-matched in the first half, even if there weren’t many chances on goal. The way we started into the second half obviously wasn’t good – we weren’t present enough after the restart. We weren’t able to find our way into the tackles as a result and couldn’t turn the game around.”

Ermedin Demirović: "We got off to a good start and played well in the first half. After the break, it was unfortunate that we conceded two quick goals and lost our footing in the match. In the end, we’re left here with nothing.”

Felix Uduokhai: "Right now, immediately after the game, I’m disappointed. The first half was decent, and we were playing the way we wanted to. Those two goals we conceded just after the break then knocked us off our rhythm. I feel bad for the fans who were cheering for us today, because that’s not how you want to start the season. We need to stay positive, improve on several things and remain optimistic going into next weekend’s game in Leverkusen.”

Christian Streich (head coach, Freiburg): “It was a tough game. We expected Augsburg to look to keep us busy with one-on-ones, which is tough to play against. We got off to a better start in the second half, and were able to score twice in short succession. Overall, I’m pleased with how every single player gave their all for the team, which is always a key for us. They have earned a compliment from me.”

Enrico Maaßen (head coach, Augsburg): “We started well and played a good game for the first 20 minutes. The first half was really even, but then we got off to a bad start in the second half because we weren’t defending well enough on set pieces. After going 2-0 and then 3-0 down, we didn’t have that confidence we had in the first half anymore. Overall, we deserved to lose, but we will now pick ourselves up and analyse the game. We need to be better on the ball and be more present in defence.”
