Maaßen: “We overcame a few challenges"

Wolfsburg match reaction

First Team 08.10.2022, 19:10

An intense match between FC Augsburg and VfL Wolfsburg finished 1-1. “We defended well and fought back in the second half,” said FCA head coach Enrico Maaßen after full time.

Tomáš Koubek: “We started really well and put Wolfsburg under considerable pressure. After going behind, we said to each other at half time to keep applying the pressure, and subsequently, we were rewarded with the goal. On a personal note, I really enjoyed playing today, and I tried to enjoy the moment. I wanted to be ready when my chance came, and I was. I’m pleased to have been able to help my team, and it was personally very important to me that I proved I’m good enough for this league.”

Robert Gumny: “We dominated the opening phase of the game but were their opener was then a setback for us. All things considered, we’ll happily take the point. It was my first goal in a season in which I’ve been playing in a more offensive position, contrary to last year. Tomáš really helped us out today and I’m pleased for him that he put in such a great performance.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We made a good start to the game and should have got ourselves a goal to make it count. Then, Wolfsburg scored with their first chance and it took some time for us to process that. However, we didn’t give up, we fought our way back into the game and got ourselves an equaliser. You could say we possibly deserved the win, but nevertheless, we showed the strong mentality of our team.”

Florian Niederlechner: “I think we deserved the three points today. We came out of the traps brilliantly, but then Wolfsburg took the lead with their first opportunity. However, we showed our strong team spirit – I’m really enjoying playing for this team right now! Things will start going better for me in front of goal at some point, but it’s much more important that we’re successful as a team.”

Maximilian Bauer: “We actually controlled the game from the first whistle, and the first goal came rather out of the blue. We were totally dominant in the second half and should possibly have gone on to win the game. The win in Bremen helped strengthen our team bond, and long may it continue!”

Niko Kovac: “Today, we saw a very intense game of football, and a match in which there weren’t many technically brilliant highlights. We knew Augsburg would want to avoid playing through the centre and would rely on the second ball. Of course, we had to defend against that and we did that successfully, on the whole. Both teams committed a lot of fouls and were given several yellow cards. At the end of the day, it’s an okay result, but I am pleased with our performance today.”

Enrico Maaßen: “We began the game really well, pressed our opponent and had a good chance to take the lead through Ermedin Demirović. We then fell behind after Wolfsburg took their first chance of the game, but we stayed calm and came back into the game. The team stabilised, we defended well and fought our way back in the second half. We created several chances and scored a goal from a set-piece against a defensively-strong team. Therefore, we’re pleased with the point, because we managed to overcome a few challenges. It was an emotional game, but it wasn’t an unfair game and we never let those emotions get the better of us.”
